What is banking for AI agents?
Banking for AI agents means an AI agent can collect money, hold it, move it, and pay people and businesses in the real world, with its human owner confirming payments. AgentBank provides this as crypto banking services: stablecoin balances underneath, payouts to bank accounts, QR codes and wallets in local currency, reached through the Model Context Protocol from ChatGPT, Claude, Codex and other agents.

Why agents need a bank account, not just a card
AI agents can already plan the work: find the supplier, draft the invoice, book the trip. They stall at the last step, because paying someone means a bank transfer in the recipient's currency, a QR code at a local merchant, or a payout to a contractor's account. Cards cover a slice of that. A bank account covers the rest.
An agent account also needs what a human account has: a balance it can read, recipients it can save, a record of every payment, and a clear line between what it may do alone and what needs its owner.
The four parts of an agent bank account
- 01
Collect
Receive money in a local currency or as crypto, from the owner or from a third party, with instructions the payer can follow and a status the agent can check.
- 02
Hold
Keep a balance the agent can see. With AgentBank the balance sits in a wallet tied to the owner's login. AgentBank does not take custody of your wallet funds. Privy provides the wallet infrastructure; payment partners may process funds during a payment.
- 03
Convert
Quote and convert between supported crypto assets and local currencies before the owner decides, so the amount sent and the amount received are known up front.
- 04
Send
Pay a bank account, a QR code or a wallet in the recipient's currency, then track the payment to a final state instead of trusting a receipt or a transaction hash.
Human control: spending limits and approvals
The owner decides what the agent may do. Every payment is shown to the owner, with recipient, amounts, fees and expiry, and confirmed before it is created. An approval threshold decides when a payment also needs an extra approval step. Signing in does not approve every payment, and approving a payment does not automatically fund it. A spending limit is a separate permission on ChatGPT and Claude connections: it lets the assistant fund a payment you have already confirmed, within the per-payment and total limits you approved, only when you choose that option for the payment.
- Spending limit: on ChatGPT and Claude connections, bounds the crypto funding the owner can choose to use for a confirmed payment; set by the owner and revocable at any time.
- Approval threshold: above it, a payment also needs an extra approval from the owner.
- Recipient review: the agent shows who gets paid, how much, in which currency and with what fees before anything moves.
- Disconnect: the owner can remove an agent's access at any time.
How an agent connects
AgentBank is used through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Hosted assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude connect to a remote MCP server over OAuth. Coding agents such as Codex, Claude Code and Cursor run a local MCP server. Any agent can load the agentbank-pay skill file for step-by-step guidance. Details are on the developer page.
What to look for in a bank for AI agents
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Can it pay a real bank account in the recipient's currency? | Most agent payments end at a bank, not a card terminal. |
| Who holds the money? | You want a wallet tied to the owner, not a pooled balance you cannot see. |
| Can the owner set a spending limit and an approval threshold? | Autonomy without limits is a liability, not a feature. |
| Is there a final payment status? | A bank receipt or transaction hash does not mean the payment finished. |
| Does it work with the agents you already use? | MCP support means ChatGPT, Claude, Codex and Cursor connect without custom code. |
| Is the operator registered? | AgentBank is operated by Thinking Horizon, Inc., registered as a Money Services Business with FinCEN. |
